Apple Arcade Takes a Bite out of the Competition!

Apple is unveiling a new Apple Arcade game subscription service today at the company’s show time event. Unlike cloud gaming services from competitors like Sony, Microsoft, Google, and Nvidia, Apple’s gaming subscription isn’t designed to stream games to iOS devices. Instead, it’s a subscription game service for titles that can be installed from the App Store.

Apple Arcade will give subscribers access to more than 100 "premium" games that they can play on their Apple devices, whether that means iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac. The company is throwing some money at exclusives and has enlisted some big-name talent like Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Ken Wong and Will Wright.

"Since every game includes access to the full experience, including all game features, content and future updates, no additional purchases will be required," reads the website.

It makes sense, given that Apple always seems to have been sort of embarrassed by how free-to-play, microtransaction-based...

Can the video game industry sustain yet another console? Well we’re about to find out because yesterday, Google left no doubt that it’s making a serious move into video gaming with a teaser trailer for what surely looks like its own game console.

So what will this Google console be? In the past we’ve heard rumors of multiple potential models of hardware with different levels of power. Maybe there’s an entry-level unit similar to that of an Nvidia Shield or Apple TV micro-console while a premium model has moderate PC specs? Xbox Live Cross Platform!?

In a push from Microsoft to make Xbox games and services more available cross-platform Microsoft announced today that it is bringing the full Xbox Live experience to iOS and Android games on mobile devices. Features of Xbox Live like achievements, Gamerscore, hero stats, friend lists, clubs, and even some family settings will all be available on iOS and Android.

For game developers, you will be able to pick and choose parts of Xbox Live to integrate into their games, and it will all be enabled through a single sign-in to a Microsoft Account. Microsoft is using its identity network to support login, privacy, online safety, and child accounts. On the safety side, game developers can use Xbox Live services that protect players, such as safety block, mute, and account permissions.
